LIDICE, June 10, 2018 — The faint sounds of children’s choirs drift across old Lidice during Sunday mass as they rehearse on a nearby hill, their songs flowing freely through the 14th-century church whose walls and bell tower have been missing for decades. On Hitler’s orders, German soldiersdestroyed St. Martin’s Church in June 1942. Only the foundation remains to embrace the faithful, who sit on benches or stand on spring-green grass during this annual mass of remembrance northwest of Prague.
